Certified Nursing Assistant (Nursing Assistant Registered or NAR)


The main role of a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) is to provide basic care to patients and assist them in daily activities that include bathing, dressing, feeding and taking vital signs. The role of a CNA is extremely essential in long term care. Compassionate individuals with a deep desire to care for others are needed to fill these positions.

Education & Experience:
A CNA must complete a state approved nurse aide training program, pass the nurse aide competency evaluation consisting of both a written and a skills test, and be listed in good standing as an NAR on the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry. A nurse aide training program consists of a minimum of 75 hours of training. The training program must be approved by the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH).

Home Health Aide or Home Care Assistant

The main role of a Home Care Assistant is to provide care to residents in assisted living settings and assist them in daily activities that could include bathing, dressing, feeding and taking vital signs. Home Care Assistants also perform delegated nursing services such as medication administration. The role of a home care assistant is extremely essential in long term care, allowing seniors to remain as independent as possible in their assisted living apartments. Compassionate individuals with a deep desire to care for others are needed to fill these positions.

Education & Experience:
A Home Health Aide (HHA) must complete a state approved program and pass a state competency exam similar to a nursing assistant. A Home Care Assistant (also known as an unlicensed personnel) must complete an orientation provided by a licensed home care provider and pass competency tests of the home care provider.

Trained Medication Aide

A trained medication aide (TMA) must complete a nursing assistant training program in addition to a standardized medication administration program. The TMA may assists the professional nursing staff in assuring that standards of resident care, comfort, and safety are maintained by administering medications and treatments.

Education & Experience:
A TMA must complete a state-approved CNA training program and a TMA training program approved by the Minnesota Department of Health provided by local community colleges/universities.
